First Gen iPod Nano Explodes

An iPod Nano owner sent an email to Steve Jobs himself to address an issue he had with his first gen iPod Nano. He said that his iPod exploded while he had it plugged in his PC to be charged. After being plugged in for somewhere between 5-10 minutes he said that he heard a sizzling sound and when he looked down on the iPod, he was just in time to see it explode open and start shooting sparks and spewing smoke.

I’ll save you the trouble of reading the whole thing and will just give you some cliffnotes of his very LONG email, he is just basically whining about his iPod not being replaced on the same day after being told by a tech (and having his hopes up that he will get a new iPod as replacement) that his First Gen iPod Nano will be replaced when he goes to the nearest Apple Store.

He is lucky that he didn’t get any injuries or the explosion didn’t damaged his laptop when his iPod exploded on his table but waiting a few days or weeks can’t be that hard right? Bitching for a replacement for your out-of-warranty first gen iPod on the same day and bitching about it some more when you didn’t get it will not get your fellow iPod owners sympathy (and I’m not saying that he is looking for one either..). Its good that Apple is considering to give you a replacement after looking at your iPod but at least give them a few days, besides its a saturday when the iPod exploded, the manager on the store ask you nicely if you can wait until monday. IMHO give them a couple of days to look into this issue, I’m sure that Apple will do the right thing if it is a major hardware malfunction.

This is not the first isue of first gen iPod exploding, there are a few more articles from Gizmodo about this issue. Some of them caused bigger problems (and one even almost burned the owners house) than our letter sender above.

I myself got a 2nd gen iPod and so far I haven’t heard any news of exploding 2nd gen iPod Nanos. Looks like I can still sleep tight at night and not worry that my iPod might explode and burn down my house.
