iTunes Tip: Make iTunes Video Float on Top
I’ve been googling out on how to set iTunes video screen/windows on top off all windows but then I get poor result, in fact it may seem that no one knows how to set itunes to do just that.
If you’re like me who like to multitask, let’s say watch video while doing some other work, you need to have the video on top of the screen and of all application windows. Unfortunately there’s no obvious settings you can see on itunes preferences other than making mini player float on top which you’ll achieve by going to iTunes Preferences – Advance TabĀ and checking “keep mini player on top of all windows”, This will make the mini player fload but not the video windows.

My first solution is – if there’s an iTunes Dashboard widget that can play video stored in the itunes library then I might just pull that to the desktop and it should stay on top while playing the video, but there’s no such widget available.
And then when hopes are gone and I almost revert to using VLC just to play video while working. I accidentally figured out how to do this with iTunes. Sorry for the long intro..
Here’s how to make itunes video playback windows on top of all other apps.
- Open iTunes 9 and play any video stored on your library.
- While the movie is playing, right-click it and select “open video in new window” and boom! it pulls the video off the player and that window floats on top no need to set anything in iTunes preferences. Also the you can set that video to any size, cool eh?

I’m not sure if that that’s documented or not, and if it works on previous version of iTunes, but it feels good to finally make that freakin video float. Thanks for reading this Tip

Doesn’t work! I followed the instructions to the letter and nothing has changed.
check the version of itunes your using, update to the newest.
make sure you play the movie first then right click the video and click “open video in new window”
It should work..
Yes, I got it to work. I just had to open my eyes and read instead of following the directions to the letter. You have to check off the box to keep movie window on top of all other windows.
I’m an idiot. Sorry.
awsome thanks so much for the tip it actually worked for me checking the
keep movie window on top of all windows
There’s already settings in the preferences to open videos (automatically) in a separate window.
But who cares if you CAN’T make it STAY ON TOP.
As soon as you click on any other space (even iTunes) the window disappears (gets buried under the new top window).
In the end, if you can’t make that separate window stay on top, then it’s pretty useless to me still.
