The 2nd Gen iPod Touch
The 2nd gen iPod Touch is now out and is slowly gaining popularity among iPod users everywhere. The new iPod Touch got a new design, a tapered back similar to iPhone 3G, chrome rim, built in loud speakers and external volume controls. Here are the features of the new iPod Touch:
-3.5-inch display.
-Volume controls.
-Accelerometer.
-802.11 b/g wireless.
-Built-in speaker.
-The Nike+ is now built-in, with a matching application and with the in-shoe RF transmitter on sale separately for $19.
-The Genius playlist. There’s icon below the play/pause icon on the Now Playing screen. If you click it, it will create a Genius Playlist of songs that you may like based on the currently playing song.
With the features listed above, the new iPod Touch does things slightly better than the previous one, but to current iPod Touch users, it may not be enough to make a switch. Let us make a review of the new iPod Touch and see for ourselves if the it is or not switch worthy.
First, let us take a look at the external volume controls of the new iPod Touch. I’m sure that current iPod Touch users will really love this addition, just imagine turning the volume up or down with just a push of a button.
Second is the built in loud speakers. Just imagine if you wanted to show some new porn err video or music to your friend, you can easily do so without even forcing them to use your earbuds. The built in speakers may not be that loud and can’t replace your headhones (specially the new In-Ear Headphones) but it will surely be handy in such scenarios.
As for the shape, the new iPod Touch got a tapered back just like the iPhone 3G, only thinner. A minor complaint is that compared to the current version of the iPod Touch, the home button feels kind of cheap. It’s less springy, more plasticky, and noisier, not that big of a deal but it is surely noticeable.
Lastly, the iPod Firmware 2.1.1. which is available for both the original iPod touch and the new one. This latest firmware introduces the Genius automatic playlist generator to the device, as well as complete Nike+ integration. Genius playlists creates a list of similar songs and artists based on your selection. You can create a Genius list in two ways. First is in the playlist menu, you can browse through your songs in a list. Or you can hit the Genius icon under the play button on the Now Playing screen. Once you do that, a new list comes up with the “Genius” picks. The Genius list is automatically stored with your other playlists until you create a new one.
The new iPod Touch also comes with new prices. $229 for the 8GB, $299 for the 16GB, and $399 for the 32GB. That’s $100 cheaper than the previous iPod Touch.
