Bill Gates on NetBooks vs The iPad
Although Bill Gates praised the iPhone, he’s not that impressed about the iPad and pointed out that it still needs a physical keyboard and a pen.
You know, I’m a big believer in touch and digital reading, but I still think that some mixture of voice, the pen and a real keyboard – in other words a netbook – will be the mainstream on that – Gates
You really expect that Bill Gates would praise a potential threat to his horde of NetBooks and Tablet PCs? The Tablet PC have been here for years but like the NetBooks, they are both flawed in terms of portability – Netbooks are too small, while Tablet PC’s are expensive, heavy and most are huge. Apple fixes the problem by creating the iPad. Debates on NetBook vs iPad will rise as the iPad becomes available but until we have tried the real thing for several months, only then we can say whether or not Netbook users would settle for an iPad.
If you remember, Bill Gates felt the same way about the iPod in 2004 but several years after they created the Zune.
There’s nothing that the iPod does that I say, ‘Oh, wow, I don’t think we can do that – Bill Gates
Depending on the success of the iPad, Microsoft will create a “ZunePad” to rival it, but soon the iPad will be a lot powerful and unless Microsoft do major innovation, it might be too late to play catch up.
