iPod Nano and iPod Touch Disassembled with a surprise inside

Not even a week after their launch, iFixit already disassembled the new 4th gen iPod Nano and 2nd gen iPod Touch. iFixit is known to disassemble new products right after they hit the market. Just like when the new iPhone 3G was launched, they waited in line to be one of the first to get the iPhone 3G just to disassemble it afterwards. They have a lot of disassembly photos which provide readers an interesting view of the internals of the latest Apple products.

In iFixit’s teardown of the 2nd Gen iPod Touch, they found a surprise: A Broadcom Bluetooth chipset! This chipset is unannounced and not listed on the spec page. Apple didn’t mention anything about the iPod Touch having Bluetooth support, although Apple did announce was that it had added Nike+ wireless support in the iPod Touch.

According to MacRumors, “the Nike+ system uses a “proprietary low-power 2.4 GHz radio protocol” which is specifically said not to be Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Bluetooth, however, appears to use the same frequency. We’re uncertain if a Bluetooth chip can emulate the Nike+ protocol or if there is a separate unidentified Nike+ receiver in the iPod Touch. Regardless, this will certainly trigger speculation about adding Nike+ support in current iPhones and additional uses of the Bluetooth chip in the iPod Touch (such as Bluetooth headsets).

Its a good thing that iFixit is really good at what they good or watching those new Apple products getting disassembled can be unbearable. It is quite interesting to find out what is inside your favorite gadgets, good thing that there’s iFixit to satisfy our curiousity needs or we would be tempted to find out ourselves.
