Warning! iTunes Software Update Email is a Virus aka Backdoor.Bifrose.AADY
Bitdefender – an anti-virus company, today reports that the iPad is now being attacked by malware and hackers. The virus is attached to an email pretending as an iTunes software update. Luckily Mac users are not affected the executable file only runs on Windows.
The email goes like this:
Subject: iPad Software Update
From: (probably hacked email server)
To: (Your email address)
Message:
Hello iPad User,
There were released updates for the software installed on your iPad device. It is very important to keep the software on your iPad updated for best performance, newer features and security.
All you need is a computer with the latest version of iTunes and internet connection for updating your iPad software. It is important to say that during software update no data is lot.
To get the latest version of iTunes software, please goto www.(content blacked out)iTunes.exe, and install the application.
After this, connect your iPad device to your computer, select iPad in the iTunes sidebar. Click ‘check for update’, to see if new version of iPad software is available or not and then click Update to install the latest version of software on iPad.
Thanks You!
BE SURE NOT TO DOWNLOAD OR INTALL THE FILE!
Failing to do so will result to data theft as the virus will inject itself to explorer.exe allowing unauthorized access and control over your system. The Backdoor.Bifrose.AADY will try to read keys, serial numbers of installed apps, as it logs your ICQ, Instant Messenger, POP3 email accounts and protected storage.
There you have it, so please keep yourself safe by using common sense. Apple will not send software updates though email, and make sure that the URL your’re downloading the file from is a verified safe source. Which makes me think “Why bitdefender or the informer blacken out the URL/domain where the file is being downloaded from”, is this a case of an anti-virus company seeding fear to sell anti-virus software? I’m not accusing bitdefender, It’s just me being skeptic.
