Multitasking For The Iphone Coming Soon?

If you can remember, Apple has announced a Push Notification System at the Worldwide Developer’s Conference  back in June, but it is still missing in the latest software update of the iPhone. Apple had originally set the deadline on September 2008 but since its removal from the beta version Apple has made no other mention of the service.

According to MacRumors, Apple is planning on allowing real background processes, making multitasking possible. Apple does not currently allow 3rd party iPhone applications to run as background processes, apps must shut down completely after use. And their answer for this used to be the Push Notification.

We still haven’t seen Push Notification and we still have no idea what the issues are but MacRumors heard that Apple is considering allowing apps to run as user selectable background processes as an alternative.

If this is true then this feature would more likely come in the rumored iPhone 3.0 software update. The next generation iPhone, with its improved hardware, would likely see less restricted background process support, but for the current iPhones, it would likely be restricted to one or two processes at a time.
