Soon you will be able to make/accept calls, send/recieve SMS on an iPad

The iPad is like an over-sized iPod Touch, and the 3G enabled units are like super-sized iPhones. Although the iPad 3G comes with a fully capable cellular unit, for some reasons Apple did not allow it to be used as a phone. Sure you can use Skype, Yahoo Messenger, and other VOIP application, but you have to pay an extra amount, and not everyone on your contact list have a 3G or wi-fi capable mobile phone.

Well good news! IphoneIslam – creator of the app that enables Facetime on iPhone 3GS – claims that they already created a hack that will allow you to make calls, send SMS, and use the iPad as a phone. The good thing is you don’t need to buy or install additional hardware, all you have to do is jailbreak your iPad and install PhoneItiPad. It’s like an unlock tool that will magically free your iPad from restrictions. Check out the

demo after the break.

As seen on the video, the iPad works like an iPhone. He was able to make and accept calls, as well as receive and send text messages. Not sure if PhoneItiPad will work on the iPad 2, but it surely works well on the first generation model. Availability and price of the jailbreak app is undisclosed, hopefully it’s not as expensive as buying a new phone.
